From Berlin Canvas to NFTs

 





Not too long ago, I stumbled upon a batch of old videos while sorting through my archives.

These low-resolution SD videos were recorded back in 2012 in Berlin, capturing the creation process of about 100 action paintings I made at the time. Left completely unlabeled with just default filenames, some clips were too dark, and in others, the paintings were barely visible.

Yet, tucked inside those raw, grainy videos were the exact moments all 100+ artworks came to life. As an artist who now releases video works every single day, I instantly knew one thing: I had to share these raw archives with the world.

The original paintings, born in my Neukölln studio in 2012, are currently held at the Maeng Museum in Kreuzberg, Berlin. There, they continue to stand witness to a vibrant space of improvised music and cultural exchanges. Before any more time passed, I wanted to show the world how these pieces were made and permanently record the photos—taken right after the paintings were finished—onto the blockchain.

That is how the 'Berlin-Action-Painting-2012' collection came to be.

Today, I’m beginning this archive with the release of the very first piece. These 100 photographic artworks will be rolled out week by week, alongside the process videos, on both my Manifold collection and YouTube.

These works also serve as the foundation for the generative mosaic series, 'Project-4-2-sai-2012,' which was released last December in 2025. 얼마 전, 과거 자료를 정리하다가 무더기 비디오 영상들을 발견하게 되었습니다.

낮은 해상도의 SD 화질로 기록된 이 비디오들은 제가 2012년 베를린에서 찍은 기록물로, 당시에 제작했던 약 100점의 액션 페인팅 창작 과정이 담긴 자료들이었습니다. 별도의 인덱스도 없이 기본 파일명으로만 방치되어 있던 영상들은 어떤 것은 너무 어둡고, 어떤 것은 그림이 아예 보이지 않기도 했습니다.

하지만 투박한 비디오 속에는 100여 점 작품들의 탄생 순간이 모두 담겨 있었습니다. 현재 매일 비디오 작품을 발행하고 공개하는 작업을 이어가고 있는 저로서는 즉시 직감할 수 있었습니다. 이 날것의 기록들을 반드시 세상에 공개해야 한다는 것을 말이죠.

2012년 베를린 노이쾰른 작업실에서 탄생한 이 100여 점의 원화들은 현재 베를린 크로이츠베르크에 위치한 '맹 미술관(Maeng Museum)'에 소장되어 있습니다. 그리고 그곳에서 즉흥음악 공연과 다양한 문화예술 교류의 현장을 오롯이 지켜내고 있죠. 더 시간이 흐르기 전에 이 그림들이 만들어진 과정을 세상에 보여주고, 제작 직후에 촬영했던 사진들을 디지털 블록체인 위에 기록해야겠다고 결심했습니다.

그렇게 탄생한 것이 바로 'Berlin-Action-Painting-2012' 컬렉션입니다.

오늘 첫 번째 작품의 론칭과 함께 이 기록을 시작합니다. 약 100점의 사진 예술 작품들은 매주 제작 과정 영상과 함께 매니폴드 컬렉션과 유튜브를 통해 순차적으로 공개될 예정입니다.

아울러, 이 작품들은 작년 2025년 12월에 이미 발행된 생성형 모자이크 작품인 'Project-4-2-sai-2012' 시리즈의 모태이기도 합니다. 이미 공개된 모자이크 시리즈가 어떻게 그런 색감과 형태, 그리고 특유의 아우라를 띠게 되었는지에 대한 시각적 해답이 바로 여기에 있습니다. 모자이크의 파편들이 지닌 파레이돌리아(Pareidolia)의 근본을, 모태가 되는 'Berlin-Action-Painting-2012' 작품 하나하나에서 발견하실 수 있을 것입니다.
